SUBCUTANEOUS MASTECTOMY (MALE CHEST REDUCTION)

Gynaecomastia is an embarrassing phenomenon for men because it gives the appearance of female breasts formation.

The tissue causing this problem is always a mixture of fibrous, glandular and fatty tissue. Where fatty tissue predominates we can remove this by Liposculpture or Advanced Laser Lipolysis to obtain excellent results.

Where the tissue is more fibrous or glandular it is impossible to remove this tissue by suction. We therefore have to make a small incision around the areola. Because this incision is at the junction of pigmented and non pigmented skin, it heals to be almost invisible. Through this incision we are able to remove the fibrous mass.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic with sedation. The chest is bandaged and the bandages kept on for one week continuously after the surgery.

There are small nylon sutures that are removed one week later. The purpose of the bandage is to prevent swelling. In the vast majority of cases there is an instant and quite dramatic difference and the chest is flat immediately.

We normally advise patients to avoid any strenuous upper body exertion for one week but after the first week, if there is not excessive swelling, normal exercise can be resumed and in fact we encourage this as it helps to get a better result more quickly.
