BREAST REDUCTION
Excessively large breasts can be a debilitating condition for many patients and cause backache and discomfort from bra straps that dig into the shoulders.
Surgery can provide an effective solution to this condition, however it is classed as major surgery and requires a general anaesthetic with an overnight stay in hospital and occasionally, 2 nights may be required.
Incisions are made around the nipples and in an anchor shape down and around the lower edge of the breast against the rib cage. The resulting scars will be minimised and fade over time so that they will not be visible when showing “cleavage”.
An important consideration for patients during counselling is the inability to breast feed after this procedure.
Breast Reduction by Liposculpture
If there is no skin laxity, breast reduction can be performed by Liposculpture, especially if the patient wishes to breast feed her babies. Prior to this procedure a mammogram is performed to ensure the breasts are healthy and to give an indication to the quantity of fat that is present in the breast.
Although the degree of reduction can not be as great as in a surgical procedure, there are no visible scars and it can be carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation as a day case procedure.
Once the density of the breast has been reduced, the overall size can be reduced by the removal of skin in a procedure called a Le Jour Mastopexy which although is surgical, results in minimal scaring and can be performed under local anaesthetic with sedation.
